The Premier League has announced a big adjustment to the VAR procedure in advance of the games that will take place this weekend in order to reduce the likelihood of a catastrophe similar to the one that took place during Liverpool's match against Tottenham last week.
The Premier League Match Officials’ League (PGMOL) and the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) have been under fire in the past week after Liverpool’s “significant human error” cost them the opening goal in their 2-1 loss to Spurs last Saturday.
As a result of a misunderstanding between the VAR official and the referee, the goal scored by Luis Diaz in the first half was incorrectly ruled to have been scored offside.
After the match was over, the PGMOL issued a statement in which they apologized to Jurgen Klopp’s squad. Following this, Liverpool made a formal request to the PGMOL for the raw audio data.
The PGMOL has said that it would modify the VAR protocol in order to forestall the occurrence of situations of a similar nature in the foreseeable future.
Before transmitting his verdict to the referee on the field, the VAR official is going to have to double check with his assistant first.
During his press conference on Thursday, Jurgen Klopp stated that despite the fact that a rematch of the game would be an ideal resolution, one will never be held.
“It is absolutely essential that we actually deal with it in the appropriate manner. Everyone who played a role in the incident, including the referee, the linesman, the fourth official, and the VAR, had no intention of letting it take place.
