Since joining Liverpool from Southampton in 2018, Van Dijk has become a cornerstone of their defense and is widely regarded as one of the best defenders of his era.
As he approaches the 2024/25 season at 33 years old, Van Dijk’s future is uncertain, with his contract at Anfield set to expire in June.
On Saturday night, Van Dijk led the Netherlands as captain in a 5-2 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina in the UEFA Nations League.
Following the match, Van Dijk discussed his future plans, as reported by The Echo.
He mentioned: “I’m still Virgil van Dijk, the key leader at both teams, and I want to continue being that for the next two years. I am human and have emotions. After a game like the one where we were eliminated by England in the last minute, you start to think about various things.
“I understand that my feelings may have seemed unclear because I was so disappointed and emotional after the match. It might have seemed like it was my last international game. That night, I had doubts and hinted at them.”
Van Dijk added: “It was really beneficial for me to go on vacation the following day and spend time with my children and family, who are the most important to me. Sharing those moments helped me calm down quickly.”
Over the weekend, reports suggested that Liverpool are prepared to offer their captain a new contract.
According to Football Insider, Liverpool’s management is determined not to let Van Dijk leave on a free transfer next summer and is eager for the 33-year-old to sign a new deal.
The report noted: “Before engaging in discussions with the club, sources indicate that Van Dijk will decide for himself where his future will be and whether the club can still meet his aspirations.”
