Ten Hag became United’s manager in May 2022, taking over from interim boss Ralf Rangnick. Since his appointment, he has overseen the departure of several high-profile players, including Cristiano Ronaldo, who left the club for a second time following his explosive interview with Piers Morgan.
Now, James Garner, who left United under Ten Hag’s tenure, has shared that his decision to depart was made after a single conversation with the Dutch manager. Garner moved to Everton in September 2022 for a reported £15 million, including add-ons.
Speaking to BBC Sport in 2023, the midfielder explained, “Ten Hag is very approachable but also very strict. He doesn’t tolerate anyone breaking the rules. He’s straightforward and holds people accountable if they do something wrong.”
“My conversation with him was straightforward. I asked him directly if I would be part of the squad or if he saw a role for me. I didn’t get the response I was hoping for, so I decided to leave.”
Garner continued, “I had a great season before that, probably the best I could have had, and I didn’t want to stagnate by sitting on the bench every week.
Nothing is guaranteed in football, but when the club starts signing three or four midfielders, you start to understand where you stand. I wanted to find first-team football as soon as I returned.”
During his time at United, Garner made just seven appearances and spent much of his time out on loan at clubs like Watford and Nottingham Forest, where he enjoyed more playing time.
Since joining Everton, the 23-year-old has made 63 appearances, scoring two goals and providing three assists from his defensive midfield position.
