Despite the loss, the tie remains very much alive. The narrow scoreline means Liverpool have every chance to overturn the deficit when they host the Turkish champions at Anfield next Wednesday. However, as Carragher insisted, the response needs to be mental as much as it is tactical. He urged the players to use the “hell” of Istanbul as a wake-up call, emphasizing that the standards expected at Liverpool do not allow for the “sluggish” and “shambolic” spells seen during this first leg.
The pressure is now squarely on Arne Slot to “earn his money,” as Carragher put it, and find a way to fix the defensive leaks while reigniting an attack that currently looks out of ideas.
