Manchester United will return Sergio Reguilon to Tottenham Hotspur after mutually deciding to terminate his loan agreement before the scheduled end of the season.

Regulion joined the Red Devils during the latter part of the summer 2023 transfer window, agreeing to a contract that will last until the conclusion of the season. United required additional options in the left-back position due to the injuries sustained by Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia. Meanwhile, Reguilon was deemed unnecessary at Spurs.

Though he has made 12 appearances for United this campaign, The Athletic believe that Reguilon will now travel back to Tottenham. United had already planned to activate a break option in the loan agreement during the middle of the season. Additionally, they have been further reinforced by Shaw’s recovery from injury, and Malacia is also nearing a return. In addition, right-back Diogo Dalot and midfielder Sofyan Amrabat have both assumed the role on the left side when necessary.

Before acquiring Reguilon, Manchester United also contemplated recruiting Marc Cucurella from Chelsea. However, they were unable to come to terms with the Blues, resulting in Cucurella remaining at Stamford Bridge.

Reguilon was prominently utilized by Tottenham throughout the pre-season under the guidance of new head coach Ange Postecoglou. However, it became evident that Destiny Udogie would assume the role of the starting left-back for the 2023/24 season.

Spurs may opt to retain Reguilon for the remainder of their season, given they are solely participating in the Premier League and FA Cup, similar to United. However, the option for him to be loaned out again persists as long as he does not feature in a first-team match this month. According to FIFA regulations, players are allowed to play for a maximum of two clubs in a single season.

Tottenham’s upcoming fixture is scheduled for Friday, including a home meeting against Burnley in the third round of the FA Cup. Following this, they will resume their participation in the Premier League on Sunday, January 14, with an away game against United.
