A Spanish court has found Dani Alves guilty of sexual assault, and as a result, he has been sentenced to four and a half years in prison.
During the month of December in the year 2022, the former Brazil right-back was facing allegations of “sexual assault by penetration” in a nightclub in Barcelona.
The prosecution had requested a sentence of nine years in prison, ten years on probation, and a compensation payment of one hundred fifty thousand euros.
Without the possibility of bail, Alves was detained at a prison in Barcelona in January of 2023.
During the course of the interrogation and the trial, his evidence was altered on multiple occasions.
At first, he asserted that he did not know the victim. Later, he asserted that they had sexual relations that were voluntary.
Finally, he admitted that he was afraid that his wife would leave him because of these charges.
It was determined by Spanish police on Thursday that Alves was responsible for the crime, and the victim’s account of the events remained unchanged.
Alves has 126 appearances for Brazil, making him the third-most capped player in the country’s history. Only Neymar (128) and Cafu (142) have played more for the Selecao than other players.
His professional career came to an end when the club that he was most recently playing for, UNAM, terminated his contract after his initial arrest in January 2023.
The player, who was forty years old at the time, was most recently signed by UNAM.
He played for Bahia, Sevilla, Barcelona, Juventus, Paris Saint-Germain, and UNAM spanning a total of 910 senior club appearances, scoring 67 goals throughout his time with each of those clubs.
