With five minutes left in the first half at St. Mary’s, Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk lost possession attempting a back-heel pass. Shortly after, Tyler Dibling was brought down by Andy Robertson, prompting referee Samuel Barrott to award a penalty.

This decision surprised many, as the incident’s location was unclear. Despite a lengthy VAR review by Michael Oliver, the on-field call stood due to a lack of conclusive evidence that the foul occurred outside the penalty area.

The Premier League Match Centre later clarified the decision, stating that the penalty call was upheld as there was no definitive proof the contact happened outside the box.

Fans reacted strongly on social media, with one arguing the foul was “OUTSIDE THE BOX” and another noting that Robertson’s foot was on the line.

Others criticized VAR, accusing it of overlooking a dive or bias against Liverpool.

Southampton capitalized on the penalty, with Adam Armstrong converting the rebound after Caoimhin Kelleher’s save, leveling the score for Russell Martin’s team.
