Manchester United defender Diogo Dalot is set to miss his first game of the season as the team takes on Southampton at Old Trafford on Thursday evening (kick-off at 20:00 GMT).
The Portuguese international received a red card during the FA Cup third-round victory over Arsenal after being shown a second yellow card for a foul on Mikel Merino in the 61st minute. As a result, Dalot is suspended for the upcoming Premier League clash, though he remains eligible to play in United’s next FA Cup match against Leicester City next month since the ban only applies to domestic league fixtures.
Dalot’s Key Role This Season
Named Players’ Player of the Year, Dalot has been an integral part of Manchester United’s squad this season. His versatility has seen him excel on both flanks, with his recent adaptation to a left wing-back role under manager Ruben Amorim further demonstrating his value. Dalot’s standout performance in the 2-2 draw with Liverpool emphasized his consistent contributions to the team.
Despite Amorim’s tendency to rotate his squad, Dalot has been a regular starter in almost every match. The only exception this season was during the Europa League fixture against Bodo/Glimt, Amorim’s first home game in charge, where Tyrell Malacia started. Dalot, however, came on as a substitute at halftime in that match.
Opportunities in Dalot’s Absence
Dalot’s suspension opens the door for other players to step up. Teammates Alejandro Garnacho and Noussair Mazraoui could use this opportunity to match Dalot’s season appearance tally.
Additionally, Tyrell Malacia may be given a starting role against Southampton, particularly after impressing during his duel with Raheem Sterling in the FA Cup match against Arsenal. Garnacho, who shifted to a more defensive role following Dalot’s dismissal, has yet to feature as a wing-back under Amorim.
As Manchester United prepare to face Southampton, the team will aim to maintain their strong home record and adapt to Dalot’s absence effectively. The match presents an opportunity for others in the squad to step up and showcase their abilities.
