There have been major ramifications from Liverpool’s 2-1 loss to Tottenham, as the PGMOL refereeing body acknowledged a “significant human error” involving VAR.
When the score was 0-0 in North London, Luis Diaz’s goal was mistakenly disallowed for offside, which led to controversy. There were rumors that the VAR booth was mixed up.
Darren England served as the game’s VAR, assisted by Dan Cook. According to reports, both thought they were making sure Diaz was actually on board.
Although this statement has been viewed with suspicion, it is consistent with the problems that PGMOL and its representatives have faced.
Referees and VAR officials have been responding to mistakes made in recent years with promptitude, and this instance is no different.
For the remainder of the weekend’s Premier League games, Cook and England will not be playing.
On Saturday night, Howard Webb personally apologized to Liverpool for the circumstances.
Although Craig Pawson was originally scheduled to serve as the fourth official for Sunday’s Nottingham Forest vs. Brentford match, Darren England has been replaced.
Dan Cook will be replaced by Eddie Smart as the assistant referee for Monday night’s Fulham vs. Chelsea match.
Cook and England will probably be subject to additional disciplinary measures for their supervision. The Premier League and PGMOL are anticipated to make the formal announcements for the fixtures for next weekend, which will include Brighton vs. Liverpool, on Tuesday. Both England and Cook could very well not be on the roster of referees and VAR officials assigned to the match, and their demotion is still up in the air.
For Fulham vs. Chelsea, Simon Hooper is expected to stay as the fourth official.
